Pharos - S24 - Y Combinator Companies
Welcome to Unpod! In today’s episode, we’ll be talking about Pharos, a company backed by Y Combinator that’s using AI to make hospitals safer by automating quality reporting and preventing patient harm. This video is part of our series exploring Y Combinator-funded companies and how they’re changing their industries.
So, what does Pharos do? Pharos helps hospitals save both time and money by automating the process of extracting crucial patient data from unstructured medical records. This data is essential for identifying areas where patient harm could be prevented. For instance, Pharos’ AI can quickly spot issues like sepsis, infections, and pressure ulcers, which helps quality teams act sooner and save lives.
Currently, hospital staff spend thousands of hours manually going through patient records to identify these risks for mandatory reporting and quality improvement. Not only is this process slow, but it’s also extremely costly, often costing a single hospital millions every year. With Pharos, this task is automated, giving hospitals real-time, accurate quality metrics directly from patient records. This data can be used for reporting, measuring the impact of improvement projects, and even tracking performance for value-based reimbursement contracts.
Pharos was founded by Felix Brann and Matthew Jones, both of whom have years of experience in health tech and AI. Felix has published significant research on sepsis prediction, while Matthew has expertise in building software that integrates smoothly with electronic health records (EHRs).
Their vision is clear: to empower quality teams with AI so they can work more efficiently and improve patient safety on a massive scale.
